DEA Compliance → Who Holds the Registration
Purpose
Explain how CS Logbook models a DEA registration — as a record that belongs to an individual veterinarian, not to the clinic — so you store and surface it in the right place. This is a product modeling decision that mirrors how DEA registration works for practitioners.

In CS Logbook
When you add a DEA registration in the Licenses feature, you choose a license scope:
- Individual — the registration is stored on the veterinarian's personal account, and the clinic can see it on the Clinic Member Licenses tab for tracking. This is the right choice for a DVM's DEA practitioner registration.
- Facility — stored on the clinic account. Use this for a registration the clinic itself holds, where applicable.
CS Logbook deliberately keeps a practitioner's DEA registration on the individual, not the clinic, so that when a prescriber joins or leaves, the registration travels with the person and the audit trail stays correct. The dispense workflow also draws eligible prescribers from individual license records.

Where the official requirement lives
CS Logbook does not decide who must register. The authoritative sources are:
- DEA Diversion Control Division — who must register and under which registrant category.
- eCFR — Title 21, Part 1301 (Registration) — covering registration requirements and separate registration by location/place of business.
If you are unsure whether a given person or location needs its own registration, consult the DEA and your state board directly.
